The Canadian Pork Industry on-farm food safety and animal care has been governed by the Canadian Quality Assurance® (CQA) program and the Animal Care Assessment™ (ACA) respectively.
In January 2018, the Canadian Pork Council (CPC) will introduce a new on-farm programs platform, named Canadian Pork Excellence (CPE). The CPE platform will present the same proven content that has garnered respect and benefited the Canadian Pork industry in gaining market access internationally and domestically. The Canadian Pork Excellence platform will include a Food Safety, Animal Care and Traceability programs.
Originally launched in 1998 under the name of Canadian Quality Assurance® (CQA), the food safety component presents requirements and good production practices based on the internationally recognized Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) model. The revised CQA® program, named PigSAFE Canada, will be the basis for maintaining and accessing new international markets. It will be an auditable program with objective questions and precise Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
